The Afrikaans speaking people of this land of ours are to be congratulated on the protection they give their language and culture. The English speakers do nothing about the abuse of their language! In fact they abuse it themselves.
I was thinking about all of these new big words in our vocabulary. Most of them are invented by various professions in order to confuse and intimidate the listener/reader. Such as legalese, computer speak and medicalese - the list goes on and on. One of the worst little words appears to be “got”. Everyone uses it and it really is quite unnecessary.
To say “I have got a cold” for example is just plain silly. “I have a cold” is the correct way to say it. After all got means obtained and have means the same - so why the got? You are in fact saying “I have have a cold”. The other often heard phrase is “you know”. Now if “I know” why are you telling me something?
All this extra verbiage adds up and leaves one breathless. Its made worse by the fact that the morons out there - eager to impress and show off actually use this trashy language as a way of showing off! You are in effect not in unless you use these words! My favourite for a good laugh is the latest “The economy will achieve a negative growth this year”! What does this actually mean? Well simply put the economy will not grow but will actually decline! In other words we are going backwards and not forwards. This is a complete and utter lie. One needs to ask why the need to lie and what kind of people actually believe this lie. Consult Proverbs for the answer folks - “only liars believe lies”.
While on this subject I would like to know how much our so called growth rate is based on production contributing to our economy? I believe it is a very small portion of the whole. The “growth rate” that Trevor Manuel burbles on and on and on about is really no such thing! After all - if our manufacturing and export figures are down then how in Hades does this government conclude that we have grown? No such thing. We have in fact shrunk.
Show me the funny but please keep it simple and straightforward!
