LADY AFRICA
Our first tribute goes to the lady
we all came to know and love -
the lady with the golden voice Lady
Africa - Margaret Singana. It was
with great shock and shame that
I learnt of her death. Margaret died a
pauper! If only we knew Mama if only we knew. If this does not paint a sorry picture of artists in this country as a community I do not know. How could this have happened! How! Please forgive us as I am sure you do Margaret.
Margaret Singana was the woman who single-handly led the hardened hearts of the Verkramptes into the new age of truth. We used to laugh at the story of how, in the height of Apartheid her beautiful song I Never Loved A Man (The Way That I Love You) was to be heard echoing around the fortress of Apartheid - the Union Buildings! How could this be! Wicked hateful people loved a black woman. Margaret will always live in our hearts and we hope that the youth of this country remember a great lady - someone who deserves special mention because she was quite simply Heaven Sent.
God Bless you Margaret - we miss you!

NOEL CECIL GLOVER
Our next tribute is to the wonderful gentle man who made us all laugh so our sides split and some of us had bad flatulence too Noel Cecil Glover. We remember him mostly with the name of our magazine DURBS. It was Noel that made Durban so famous with his trademark Howzit Durbs! Noel always made us laugh in those dark times of Apartheid when English speaking white south africans were treated like 2nd class citizens by the Boere Bully Boys in power. Who can ever forget Noel’s succint attack on the Boere Boetie jobs like
how (true story) someone received an electricity bill from the City Council for R1Million and upon query was told to “pay the bill first and then you can complain” or his presentation of the Post Office Mistress! Noel was born 19/09/1938 , attended Overport Primary School before enrolling at Glenwood in 1952. He left in 1957 , having written his matric . He was a talented sportsman , playing 1st XI cricket for 4 years from 1954 - 1957 . He was awarded his Honours Blazer for cricket in 1956 and again in 1957. Noel was also a member of the bugle band [ drummer ] in 1956 when Glenwood won the Administrator`s Shield [ the premier competition in Natal ] . In 1957 he was awarded his Honours blazer for the Band . He won the individual drumming competition in the Durban and District Band Competition in 1957. Whew! With much thanks to Mr Kevin Jordan of Glenwood High School Old Boys Union.
God Bless you Noel - we miss you!
