He is South Africa’s greatest human rights trial lawyer.
Being a Greek refugee, he subsequently got caught up in the struggle against apartheid, choosing law as his weapon of choice.
A great believer in human rights, he has been involved in a number of high profile cases. He assisted 10 leaders of the ANC, including Nelson Mandela to escape the death penalty during the infamous Rivonia trial. They are now great friends.
He has represented the families of Steve Biko, Ahmed Timol and Chris Hani, and has also defended Winnie Madikizela- Mandela on more than 20 occasions.
But he’s especially renowned for his involvement with the government, arguing that the death penalty is unconstitutional.
And most recently, he successfully defended Morgan Tsvangirai, who was accused by the Zimbabwean government for conspiring to assassinate Robert Mugabe before the 2002 elections and charged with high treason.
He is George Bizos.
And he has just released his long overdue autobiography called Odyssey to Freedom.
