On Tuesday 20 February at 8pm, 3rd Degree takes you right into the terrifying and bloody underworld of a rebel Nigerian group, which believes it is fighting a just cause. They are armed to the teeth, dangerous and have waged war against oil companies working in the Niger Delta.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) is protesting the environmental devastation caused by the oil industry which operates deep in the Niger Delta swamps.
In the past year, they claimed responsibility for the deaths of seventeen Shell workers, they have blown up facilities and taken people hostage – the latest being 24 Filipinos. The Filipino men were released this week.
CNN’s Jeff Koinange travelled to the region and managed to film the organization in its secret hideout and speak to the hostages in captivity. It is chilling footage which gets closer to the story than anyone else has ever managed.
Third Degree also speaks to the oil companies and the Nigerian government who are accused by MEND of perpetuating corruption and environmental havoc.
