Sancoussie, Danielle Perlman and Sasha De Marigny. One of my reviewers has described it as moving, humorous, revealing and hard-hitting and a must for everyone interested in the lives that performers lead on and off the stage.
Out at Sibaya in the iZulu Theatre, there’s Ta Ta Ma Chance - the South Africa Dream billed as a hilarious play directed and scripted by Kevin Palium who appears with Michael Mbhele and Nompumelelo Ndlovu. The diminutive Michael Mbhele recently returned from the UK where he worked for two months on the Warner Brothers movie Fred Claus alongside Kevin Spacey, Vince Vaughn and Ludacris. Ta Ta Ma Chance runs at Sibaya until April 22. Shows are from Wednesdays to Sundays.
The Magnificent 7 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre has been described by one of my reviewers as just stunning. It is a collaborative effort between Aaron McIlroy and a fantastic band from Port Elizabeth. There’s lots of fun and nonsense and apparently some great music. This show runs
until April 22 but it sounds as if tickets will be much in demand so it’ll be best to get to see it soon.
Running at The Playhouse until the end of the week is Bad Girls Do Go To Heaven? presented in association with Dingaling Productions. Written and directed by Yugan Naidoo, it features Kajal Maharaj, Ilasha Ramaloo, Samantha Govender and Upasna Beharie - a welcome introduction of new faces on the theatre scene.
The Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg will present two plays in tandem next week. Written and directed by Morwenna Bosch for the Drama Studies performance module at the University of KZN Pietermaritzburg, A Good Woman is a multimedia theatre piece that draws upon Japanese Noh and Kabuki Theatre aesthetics and contemporary sensibilities to tell the story of a young Chinese woman. Performances are from April 19 to 21
The other production is Greig Coetzee's acclaimed play, Johnny Boskak is Feeling Funny, which has two performances on April 20 and 21 at 19h30. For anyone who has not seen this exciting combination of Shakespearean verse and American rap, this is an opportunity not to be missed. Michelle Coetzee has created
South African landscapes for the projections and guitarist Syd Kitchen plays his original soundtrack for the show while Greig performs. To book, phone the Hexagon on 033 260 5537.
On the supper theatre front, Daniele Pascal is performing at the Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest until Sunday – she’s a great singer who always offers an entertaining programme. There’s The British Invasion at the Dockyard Theatre in Musgrave Centre; Stars Showbar in Umhlanga has Girl Power and at the Barnyard Theatre at Gateway there’s The Fab Four followed by two performances by Arno Carstens on Wednesday and Thursday next week.
There’s jazz every Wednesday at Yossi’s in Davenport Road with an impressive line-up of musicians. At the Zulu Jazz Lounge at the Playhouse tomorrow night you can enjoy the music of Paul Kock and Friends at 9 o’clock and next Thursday, Darius Brubeck will be performing at the same time.
