It is every young rugby player’s dream to make it to the big time. To become the next Bryan Habana, Jean De Villiers or Victor Matfield. Their journey usually begins on the school rugby field. It is here where raw talent is supposed to be harnessed and developed.
But South Africa’s school grounds have increasingly become a place where dreams are shattered and too many lives destroyed.
In the past six years at least ten school boys have died as a result of injuries incurred on the rugby field. So far this year there have been five serious rugby accidents at our schools. Who should be held responsible for this tragedy?
Is the rugby fraternity doing enough to address the problem?
